Jackson Center, PA

Marilyn Joanne Young Doherty, age 79, of Jackson Center, passed away on Sunday, June 28th, 2026 at home surrounded by her adoring family. She was born in Grove City in May of 1947 to loving parents Harold G. & Lucille Young.

They called her “Sunshine” because that’s what it felt like when she entered any room. A beautiful red head raised mostly by her father, she could do anything she set her mind to. Marilyn was an asset to any business she chose to work for starting with Grove City Pizza Villa at age 16. Her skills ranged broadly and she was just as comfortable managing a high-end retail store as she was wearing steel toed boots in the factory as an expeditor. She retired from Cooper Bessemer in 1992 but continued to work in several retail stores where she connected with the community.

Marilyn married the love of her life, Dan R. Doherty on May 31st, 1991 and they enjoyed 35 beautiful years together traveling the world and living a full life. She learned to snow ski at age 42 so she and Dan could explore mountains from East to West and beyond, including many places in Europe with the Warren Ski Club where she was also the club secretary.

The beach was her second home where you could find her ocean front enjoying sunrises and sunsets with her daughters and grandchildren in Surfside Beach, SC. Many hours were spent hunting seashells and shark’s teeth with her family and beloved miniature schnauzer.

Marilyn loved the Lord with all her heart and diligently studied the Bible through Bible Study Fellowship where she became a valued member of her groups sharing with insight and compassion.

A prolific crafter and always a giver in nature, she made special pillows and donated them for patients in nursing homes, hospitals, and hospice care, wherever they were needed. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, making beautiful quilts, rugs, bags, wreathes, or anything you wanted. She could make it. Other hobbies included reading, watching movies, and especially nature photography as she loved birds, flowers, sunsets and sunrises. She collected antique glass, seashells, and the hearts of her neighbors and friends from next door to around the world. She was a trusted friend and confidante to so many. She loved music and she loved to dance.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Dan R. Doherty; two children, Jennifer (Gary) Cutshall-Spencer and Catherine Cutshall-Sutz; three grandchildren Grace, David, and Justin; three step-children, Dale (Donna) Doherty, Leann (Ted) Martin, and Janine (Michael) Simmons; five step-grandchildren, Michelle, Abby, Marissa, Erika, and Cody; she is further survived by several step-great grandchildren.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Lucille; and two brothers Harold J. Applebee and Eugene H. Young.

Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to Rose Simplicity Cremation and Funeral Center Inc. 200 Erie Street, Mercer.

There will be no public services.
